Life expectancy
Sir,—Your friendly newspaper dentist tells us (January 25) that European civilisation has given the Maoris teeth problems. I have the impression that before the arrival of the Europeans the life expectancy of Maoris was a little under 40 years. It is now over 60 years. Perhaps a Maori reader would like to comment on whether an extra 20 years of life (complete with Holdens, fish and chips, and the T.A.8.) is worth a little tooth trouble. — Yours, etc., R. M. BURDON. January 25, 1988.
