Piggott subject of new tax inquiry
NZPA-AFP London Lester Piggott, the English jockey who became a racing legend and was jailed for tax fraud last year, is the subject of a new Inland Revenue inquiry. His solicitor, Jeremy Richardson, has confirmed that tax investigators are again looking at the former British champion jockey’s earnings over the last few years. "It’s not part of the original prosecution because Lester has paid all the tax arising from that," said the lawyer. “Negotiations on the actual amount of tax still outstanding on other matters are taking place.” Richardson would not reveal the amount of money or length of time involved, adding only: “It covers the recent past and is no different from any argument any other taxpayer might have about money that might be owed.” Piggott was jailed for three years in October at Ipswich Crown Court for defrauding the Inland Revenue of more than £3 million (SNZB million) in tax.
