Golden King for Jarden Mile

PA Wellington An abundance of good races available to the talented Levin three-year-old, Golden King, was behind the decision to pay up for him in Saturday’s $lOO,OOO group one Jarden Mile at Trentham. After the Imposing gelding had beaten his rivals in last Saturday’s $50,000 CRS Wellington Stakes, over 1600 m, for three-year-olds at Trentham his co-trainer, Garth Ivil, said the horse would by-pass the Jarden Mile. At that stage Ivil was in favour of lining up Golden King next in the $BO,OOO weight-for-age Wrightson Bloodstock Plate over 2100 m, next Monday at Ellerslie. Ivil’s reasoning was that the Ellerslie event would provide Golden King with right-hand racing experience which he will need if he is to prove a force for the rich Sydney Autumn carnival where racing is conducted on righthanded tracks. Ivil also expects middle distances will be Golden King’s strong suit and the Ellerslie race would have given the chance to confirm that theory. Ivil’s son, and training partner, Craig, yesterday morning gave an example of the enviable position they are in with Golden King.

“If he had drawn wide at Trentham on Saturday we would have gone to Auckland — there are just that many options,” Craig Ivil said.

“There are so many races coming up in the next two months that just trying to sort out a programme is not easy — there are so many good races. “Those races in Sydney aren’t until April so there is still plenty of time to give him a go righthanded and over ground.” Craig Ivil said that a part-owner, Jumbo Symes, being a past steward of the Wellington Racing Club was only a minor influence in accepting the horse for the Jarden. “Jumbo” was very keen for him to start at Trentham but he never insisted on him starting. They left the decision to us. “If we really wanted to take him up to Auckland we would have. We thought the Auckland race was a good option as far as Australia is concerned. We are in a fortunate position where we can pick and choose” Ivil said.
