Film quotes banned people
NZPA-Reuter Johannesburg South African newspapers may be prosecuted for publishing advertisements for the anti-apart-heid film, “Cry Freedom,” which quoted banned people. A police spokesman said that the advertisements, which appeared in English - language Johannesburg and Pretoria newspapers, had been referred to the Transvaal provincial attorneygeneral for a decision on whether to prosecute. They included quotes from the main characters in the film, the black leader, Steve Biko, and
white newspaper editor, Donald Woods. Both are banned, meaning their words cannot normally be published in South Africa. In an apparent attempt to avoid legal problems, the advertisements said that the quotes were from the film script.
Pretoria had been expected to ban or censor Sir Richard Attenborough’s film but it has been passed for screening here later this year. “Cry Freedom” deals with the friendship between Woods and Biko, who has become a martyr in the anti-apartheid struggle since his death in polish custody in 1977.
