Pelling 'crucified’ by stewards

NZPA-AAP Brisbane The top Brisbane jockey, Mike Pelling, was suspended for two months after an inquiry into his handling of the 5-4 favourite, Marhena, in the First John Macarthur Maiden at Eagle Farm on Tuesday. Marhena led for most of the run down the straight but was collared close to the line by 7-1 chance, Kadmos, which went on to win by half a length. Stewards said that from the entrance to the straight, to near the 50 metre mark Pelling had failed to ride with the required amount of vigour to give his charge every available chance to win. “I’m being crucified for an error of ■ judgment,” Pelling told the chairman of stewards, Mr Ray Murrihy. Pelling said he would appeal against the sentence. “This is the first time I have ever been queried on a ride since I began riding in 1976,” he said.
