Defending Masters champion beaten in first round
NZPA-AFP London Dennis Taylor of Northern Ireland, defending champion in the Snooker Masters, was tumbled out of the $NZ339,750 tournament in the first round here on Sunday night by England’s Mike Hallett. Hallett, aged 28, marked his debut in the event with a 5-3 victory over the former world champion, his third win in succession over Taylor. Hallett, who earned his in-
vitation by climbing from twenty-seventh to sixteenth in the world rankings last season, was never behind, building a 3-0 lead first with breaks of 74, 50 and 44. The world number eight battled back to level the match at 3-3, but Hallett showed his newly found selfbelief by winning the next two frames. ‘‘l played well in the first three frames and then let it slip,” said Hallett. “Dennis wasn’t going to let
his crown go easily and he came back tremendously,” he said.
Taylor added: “I thought I was going to win when I got back to three all, but Mike kept knocking in the long pots and he had a super run off the ball.” First round result: Mike Hallett (England) bt Dennis Taylor (Northern Ireland) 5-3.
