NZPA-AAP Sydney Organisers of the Aboriginal Long March protest through Sydney yesterday requested police protection from possible attacks from “racists” who might be drinking at city pubs along their route. The request came just before the thousands of protesters left Redfern Oval in the city’s inner west at 11 a.m. to make their way to Hyde Park.
A band of Sydney elders led the march with a group of Aboriginals, clad in traditional tribal paints, taking part in a corroboree following.
The protesters, who were joined by hundreds of white supporters, were due to march down Chalmers Street to Elizabeth Street, then down Eddy Avenue to Belmore Park for a two-hour rally before moving on to Hyde Park.
