Busiest day for sea rescues

The Canterbury Regional Lifeguard Squad made 12 sea rescues yesterday in its second busiest day so far this summer. The warm temperatures saw people flock to the beach for a cooling dip in the sea. The lifeguard squad’s co-ordinator, Mr Geoff Barry, said that most of the rescues were caused by swimmers becoming caught in holes or rips. One of the six people rescued at Taylors Mistake was taken to hospital after he was bruised by a canoe before the squad retrieved him from the water. Three people were rescued at both Sumner and Woodend beaches. “It was probably our biggest day in terms of numbers of people using the beach,” said Mr Barry. “They were just saturated with people, especially New Brighton beach.” During a hot day last week, the lifeguard squad made more rescues, but 10 of these were at the same beach.
