Improved toilets wanted

Public toilets in Cathedral Square should be better signposted, open longer and improved, said Christchurch City councillors yesterday.

The cultural and community services committee recommended work on the toilets after hearing of tourists who could not find the women’s toilet and of more, than 50 inquiries at the police kiosk on New Year’s Eve. “It is time we did something about the women’s

toilets,” said Cr Noala Massey. “They should not be on the second or third floor in an old building.”

. The toilets had to be clearly marked so that people could find them. It was essential the council did something about facilities for women, perhaps building two sets of fewer toilets on .either side. of the Square, because they could not go into hotels looking for toilets at night

as men could. The committee recommended opening the toilets after 11 p.m. for three months to see if there was a demand late at night.

It also asked for more signs to be put up as soon as possible and urgent consideration of a proposal to improve and shift the women’s toilets.

It rejected the suggestion of portable toilets in the Square on New Year’s Eve.
