Fiji briefing for Cabinet
Political reporter
The Cabinet was briefed yesterday on the situation in Fiji by the Minister for Pacific Islands Affairs, Mr Prebble.
Mr Prebble spent his holidays in Fiji. His wife, Nancy, is Fijian. A spokesman for his office said the Minister might comment publicly on his assessment of Fiji later this week.
The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, will arrive in Fiji this morning
for a three-day visit. He had been due to meet the new President, Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau, but this is thought to have changed with the President having taken ill.
A spokesman for Mr Bolger said he still hoped to meet Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, who is Prime Minister under the new constitution. Every effort would also be made to have discussions with members of the ousted Bavadra Government, the spokesman said.
