Record stand

A record fifth-wicket partnership in first-class cricket by New Zealand batsmen was established by the former New Zealand wicket-keeper, Ervin McSweeney and Gavin Larsen of Wellington at the Levin Domain yesterday. Playing in a Shell Trophy game against Central Districts, McSweeney and Larsen piled on 341 runs and beat the previous record of 319 set by Ken Rutherford and Even Gray at Scarborough in 1986. That day Rutherford scored 317.

McSweeney and Larsen came together at 79 for four on Monday with Wellington chasing Central’s first innings score of 131.

When the partnership was finally broken Larsen had reached 161 and McSweeney was unbeaten on 205, his first double-century in firstclass cricket.

McSweeney reached 200 in 288 minutes off 245 balls.
