Bowlers arrive
PA Auckland The Irish team, including its world champion triple of Stan Espie, Sammy Allen and Jim Baker, arrived yesterday for World Bowls 1988 and were soon at practice. Baker and Espie played in New Zealand in the test series in 1985. Espie, the only player to beat lan Dickison at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, will play the singles. Baker will skip both the triple and the four at Henderson. The English team also arrived yesterday. The top player, Tony Allcock, did not seem enthusiastic about the prospect of playing in a celebrity proam triples tournament tomorrow. His eyes brightened,
however, when he learned Henderson was the venue. The chance of an extra three hours on the World Bowls greens is a bonus for the dozen or so internationals invited to play in the pipe-opener for the championships. Included in Allcock’s triple will be the All Black rugby wing, John Kirwan. Top players in the fun event include George Souza, David Bryant, Baker, Espie, Willie Wood, Gordon Seef, Kenny Williams and the New Zealanders Peter Beiliss, Phil Skoglund and the team manager, Kerry Clark.
Stars from other sports ■will be Bert Sutcliffe, Gary. Whetton, Paul MacDonald, Gary Kemble, Grant Fox, and Julie Townsend.
