Kiwis advance to second round

PA Auckland Belinda Cordwell and Claudine Toleafoa yesterday became the third and fourth New Zealanders to advance to the second round of the international women’s tennis tournament in Auckland. Cordwell beat Marianne Van Der Torre (Netherlands) 6-2, 7-5, while Toleafoa defeated another Dutch player, Yvonne Der Kinderen, 6-3, 6-1. Julie Richardson and Ruth Seaman had on Monday won their games in the Nutri-Metics event.

Cordwell, playing with confidence and volleying crisply, did not show the nerves of former years.,'

In 1985, as the top seed, she was beaten in the first round. Last year, in the second round, Cordwell again suffered from nerves, losing to the Australian Stephanie Faulkner. “In other years, I put on a show of outward confidence, but now the confidence I have is from within and I know I can produce the good tennis to win,” Cordwell said yesterday. “It was always difficult for me to play before my home crowds because there is something extra expected from you, just as the Australians find it hard to play before their home crowds. I really pity the English players where they take part in one of the world’f big

events before their own supporters. “I just kept concentrating on the match even if I had to look down on the ground to block out the people in the stands.”

Yesterday she displayed none of the brittleness obvious in her earlier appearances at Stanley Street. A double fault by Van Der Torre enabled Cordwell to break service immediately. Cordwell broke again in the fifth game, but her opponent broke back. A break by Cordwell in the seventh game gave her the set 6-2.
