Dixon may achieve goal
PA Auckland Rod Dixon might yet achieve his goal of representing New Zealand in the world cross-country championships at Ellerslie Racecourse on March 26. But the 38-year-old veteran of four world crosscountry championships and three Olympic Games must first write to the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association for dispensation from the national cross-country trials on February 28. Despite his age, Dixon showed he is still a leading contender for New Zealand’s world crosscountry championship team when he brilliantly won a warm-up event over Bkm in Auckland last Wednesday. He will be unable to
contest next month’s national trial because it clashes with the Los Angeles marathon, in which he is competing. The Los Angeles marathon is being used by the national athletic selectors as a selection trial for the Seoul Olympics. Dixon/ is also keen to represent New Zealand in? the marathon in Seoul later this year. One of New Zealand’s three national cross-coun-try selectors, Arch Jelley, has told Dixon he must apply in writing to the N.Z.A.A.A. if he wants to be/ considered for the i New Zealand team for the world cross-country championships. The N.Z.A.A.A. selection policy says it is mandatory for all athletes seek-
ing selection to compete in the trials. The selection policy adds, however, that dispensation from the trials will be granted in the event of extreme compassionate grounds. Past performances over road, cross-country and on the track will also be evaluated by the selectors in naming the teams to represent New Zealand in the senior men’s, junior men’s and women’s events. “I have told Rod that the selectors couldn’t consider him unlesss he runs in the trials or gets dispensation from the N.Z.A.A.A.,” Mr Jelley said yesterday. ‘T’ve advised him to put his request in writing.”
