Datura effects stressed
PA Wellington People who experiment with the plant datura, could suffer nasty side effects and risk death, the Wellington Alcohol and Drug Centre says. The dangers of the plant were highlighted recently when two men were found by the police in Lower Hutt — one unconscious and the other disorientated and semiconscious.
The centre was recently approached by agencies for advice on the dangers of drinking a brew from leaves of the plant. Small doses of chemical produced by the plant are used medically to relax the muscles of people suffering from paralysis. Doses of more than 10 milligrams can cause hallucinations, disorientation in time and place, confusion, memory loss, paranoid thinking, agitation, speech disorders, impaired body co-ordination and dilated pupils and convulsions, the centre says.
