Slick run from Cool Charm Girl
Cool Charm Girl ran her rivals ragged over the last mile of the 3200 m Foxton Fries Handicap in 2:1.9 to win decisively by three lengths at the N.Z. Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting last evening.
This was the third win at Addington Raceway this season for the talented Smooth Fella mare, which earlier won a double at the leading South Island harness track in October, both times over 2600 m from behind the mobile gate. Prepared at Marshland by Steve O’Brien, Cool Charm Girl stepped away without a hitch from a stand last evening, taking control early before giving the lead to Aces Wild.
Not content with the pace 1400 m out, O’Bien was out to attack again
with Cool Charm Girl and was always travelling too well for her rivals in front over the last lap.
Cool Charm Girl, which is bred on the same Smooth Fella — Good Chase cross as Smooth Millie, a 1:53.8 miler in North America, paced the 3200 m last evening in a fine 4:12.37, which lowered Captain Pete’s long-standing Addington C 3 class record of 4:10.6, set in 1976. She is raced by O’Brien in partnership with a Hororata farmer, Mr Harry Ballagh.
Silver Beam, which received the run of the race on the outer, fought on for second, with Princess Jilaire, wilting over the closing stages to finish third.
Jay Ardee, back and wide over the last mile, fought on well to finish next.
