Emerging Players fight back
The Canterbury Emerging Players team has fought its way into a strong positionagainst the visiting New South Wales Emus Colts team in their three-day cricket game at Hagley Oval. Overnight, Canterbury was struggling at 76 for four after dismissing the Emus for 223. But centuries by Jon Preston (137) and David Bond (111 not out) yesterday enabled Canterbury to establish a first innings lead of 113 before declaring. Preston figured in two big partnerships yesterday. With Gary Lund, he added 121 for
the fifth wicket and then he combined with Bond to add 93 for the sixth wicket before he was out. Preston hit 16 fours in his 306 minute innings and when he was dismissed, Bond continued in the aggressive style that punctuated his innings. He scored his 100 in 139 minutes off 100 balls and struck 17 fours. Scores: N.S.W. Emus 223 and 79/2 (M. Grace 33 not out) met Canterbury Emerging Players 366/9 dec. (J. Preston 137; D. Bond 111 not out; G. Lund 33; C. Sims 3/56; J. Austin 2/99).
