Clode defeats Renner again

Phil Clode (St Martins) made it two in a row over rival Peter Renner (New Brighton) in the second of the Adidas King and Queen of the Road running series in North Hagley Park in Christchurch last evening. Renner, the joint recordholder on the skm course, was expected to be sharper last evening and Clode himself had doubts before the race about his ability after having run a fast 10,000 m in the Canterbury championships on Saturday, when he was runner-up in a photofinish with Tom Birnie (New Brighton). But Clode opened up a break early in the three-lap race and won in 14:09, a good time in the warm conditions. Debbie Tipper (University), who won the Canterbury women’s 1500 m title with Mary O’Connor (University) on Saturday, won the women’s section last evening. Prue Taylor (University), the World Veteran Championships winner over 10,000 m and cross country, finished third and broke her own veteran record last evening. One hundred and fortyeight finished the race, organised by the St Martins Athletics and Harrier Club.
