Housing for elderly to be improved
A series of proposals to improve the Christchurch City Council’s housing units for the elderly have been recommended by the public utilities committee.
Late last year the committee requested a comprehensive report on improving the units and oh investigation into emergency alarm system used in England. The committee recommended yesterday that the council continue to remodel bedsitter units to include a separate bed-
room, and support the installation of alarm systems approved by the Departent of Social Welfare. It recommended that the council ask the Minister of Housing to increase the amount of loan money available to finance the work, and to ask the Minister of Health to clarify the position on subsidies for the conversion of the units to electric heating. The council should also support a detailed investigation into the length of occupancy of the units, said the report.
