Man savagely beaten in park
A 70-year-old man is in a fairly comfortable condition in Christchurch Hospital after being savagely beaten in an assault in Victoria Park, Rangiora, on Saturday evening. Three youths have been arrested. One appeared in the District Court in Christchurch yesterday after being held in police custody. The other two will appear in the District Court in Rangiora on February 10, one in the Children and Young Persons Court. The youths will appear on a variety of charges. Detective Martin Lucas of Rangiora said that the assault also left two other people unconscious, one a young woman who tried to intervene to protect the 70-year-old man.
Another person was knocked unconscious while sitting on a park bench. Both were treated by St John Ambulance staff for bruising. Detective Lucas said that the series of assaults began at about 10.20 p.m. when a group of youths were in Victoria Park. Another group was walking down Percival Street. Three youths went into the park and assaulted two people on a park bench, knocking one unconscious.
One youth went over to the 70-year-old man. with intent to assault him but the young woman intervened, and was knocked unconscious.
“The man was savagely beaten,” Detective Lucas said.
