Public wants historic buildings protected

PA Wellington More should be done to protect historic buildings and the responsibility for the protection should come from local government, according to a Heylen survey conducted by the Historic Places Trust. The survey found high levels of public support for the preservation of old buildings and the work of the trust. The trust’s spokesman,

Lindsay Wright, said the amount of public support was surprising. “The message for both local and central government is that they will have high levels of public support for any efforts they make to protect historic buildings,” Mr Wright said. Of those surveyed, 75 per cent said city councils should do more towards preservation. 58 per cent thought the Government

should have more of a role in stopping demolition.

Over all, 61 per cent said too many important buildings were being pulled down.

Mr Wright said the survey revealed a high level of awareness~of the trust and its work.

Support was highest in the large cities, where more buildings are being lost, he said.
