House saved by boy
PA Auckland A house in the Auckland suburb of Papakura was saved by the bell at the week-end after a panic-stricken boy dialled 111 to tell firemen the couch in the lounge was on.fire.
But the boy, aged eight, could not spell the name of his road, and pronounced it so it sounded like one in a completely different part of Auckland. The Fire Service asked for a check on the boy’s number, and Telecom came back with the correct address, allowing firemen to rush help to the scene. The fire control supervisor, Mr Rodney Adamson, said later that firemen pulled the couch outside and “drowned” it. He said the quick trace on the call saved a potentially serious situation.
