John Curtin continued his Robert Sangster-type presence at New Zealand standardbred yearling sales by bidding $295,000 for Smooth Laughter at the inaugural New Zealand Premier Yearling (Standardbred) Sale yesterday. The big-spending manager of Curtins Farm set the Addington showgrounds buzzing for a second time within 12 months by taking home the prize lot yesterday, having paid $340,000 last March for
Roydon Reign in partnership with South Taranaki Bloodstock. Yesterday’s expensive purchase is also under a joint arrangement. Curtin put a proposition to Smooth Laughter’s Rangiora breeder and vendor, Maurice Vermeulen, that they go halves in the richly-bred daughter of Smooth Fella and Vermeulen’s former outstanding racemare, Hilarious Guest (1:57.3). . .
