Lyttelton moorings
Sir,—Tuesday’s gale, gusting to almost 80 knots, has emphasised again the importance of retaining deep, sheltered water in Lyttelton Harbour at all costs, and completely justified the opposition to reclaiming a large part of the inner harbour. The cruise ship Royal Viking Star, berthed at Gladstone Pier in the very area it was proposed to reclaim, still had great difficulties and needed two tugs to ensure her safe mooring. In .addition, your picture of small boats plunging at their moorings in Magazine Bay marina would have boat owners reaching for their tranquillisers. This is all the more galling since the area in the inner harbour from which 40 moorings were removed stands empty and unused, and not likely to be, in the foreseeable future. — Yours, etc.,
B. R. WALKER January 20, 1988.
