Open fires
Sir,—-Congratulations to the Waimairi councillors who opposed the move to ban open fires in the district in the not-so-distant 1992. The elderly, who in many cases are living alone, would be deprived of the comfort, cheer and warmth that an open fire provides. Their thanks must go to the councillors who had this in mind when opposing the ban. The benefits arising from the ban would be largely aesthetic and would not outweigh the distress and expense it would cause. An expensive propaganda campaign by the United Council, and ratepayer-funded, to alert citizens of the possible health hazard from open fires, has since been totally contradicted by the Health Department in a separate report. Further attempts to proceed with this insensitive and Draconian measure should be delayed until next year’s local body elections have provided ratepayers with an opportunity to express their opinion. — Yours, etc.,
NEIL T. ARMSTRONG. January 20, 1988.
