Troubled aircraft returns

An Antarctic-bound American Hercules aircraft that had to turn back for Christchurch on Thursday after a suspected fuel leak was forced to return a second time when it attempted to resume the flight. Emergency services at the airport turned out after the aircraft dumped fuel at sea before making its first landing at 6.45 p.m. The aircraft was checked but no fuel leak was found, so the Hercules resumed its flight to the Ice. However, the

same problem was again encountered and the Hercules returned to Christchurch at 11.32 p.m. Emergency services at the airport stood by as a precaution but the aircraft made a safe landing. The informaton officer with the United States Naval Force Antarctica, Petty Officer Margaret Young, said a fuel leak was later found and the aircraft underwent repairs yesterday. She said the Hercules was expected to be ready for duty late in the afternoon.
