c; H R I S T C H HR CH Managing Director MUNICIPAL ELECTRICITY BOARD CHRISTCHURCH MAJOR NEW APPOINTMENT In anticipation of legislation during 1988 enabling companies to be formed to retail electricity, the Christchurch City Council has set up a semi-autonomous Municipal Electricity Board to control its electrical supply undertaking from Ist January 1988. .This board comprises a mix of established business people and councillors with business experience. It has widely delegated powers enabling it to operate solely on commercial principles. The business has a turnover in excess of $100,000,000 per annum and a staff establishment of about 600. It is the second largest power supply undertaking in the whole country with 107,500 consumers. The need is for a Managing Director, with a seat on the Board, and accountable to it, able to cope with the detail to ensure today’s profitability and with the vision to maximise tomorrow’s growth. The appointee will be able to demonstrate a successful track record in the general management of a multi-faceted commercial organisation not necessarily in the field of electricity supply. Indeed, private sector bottom-line skills may well constitute a valid claim to appointment. The maturity in outlook and judgement required indicates a likely age group of 35 to 50 years.
