Canterbury took the honours in the under-14 boys’ South Island softball tournament which was contested in Balclutha. Results were: Marlborough 5, Southland 3; South Canterbury 8, South Otago 4; Eastern Southland 15, Mid-Canter-bury 4; Marlborough 3, Canterbury 2; Otago 14, Southland 6; South Canterbury 11, Mid-Canterbury 4; Eastern Southland 8, South Otago 1; Otago 6, Marlborough 0. Final: Canterbury 3, Southland 0. Final placings: Canterbury 1; Eastern Southlland 2; Marlborough 3; Southland 4; South Canterbury 5; Otago 6; South Otago 7; Mid-Canterbury 8.

Waikato maintained its unbeaten record to win the North Island under-14 boys’ softball tournament in Levin. Waikato downed Hutt Valley 7-1, with pitcher Dean Nepe in outstanding form. Nepe faced 23 batters and pitched a nohit, no-walk game for 14 strikeouts.
