Body found by fireman

An elderly Christchurch man was found dead in a Mairehau house on Wednesday, where the Fire Service had been called to a small fire. The fire in Briggs Road, reported at 9.50 a.m., caused only slight damage. A police spokesman said- the man showed no obvious signs of having died as a result of the fire, but possibly had died from natural causes. A post mortem examination was being held to determine the cause of death. It was not being treated as suspicious. The police were still trying to find relatives of the man yesterday.
