MoT driving franchise

The All Star Driving School and the Canterbury Automobile Association yesterday received a franchise from the Ministry of Transport to run defensive driving courses. Last year the Defensive Driving Council ran into financial trouble and was wound up. The Ministry of Transport bought the rights to the courses from the council. The Ministry then formed the Defensive Driving Trust to promote the courses on a franchise basis. Course managers, trainers and council members involved in defensive driving in Canterbury formed the Driver Improvement Association, to offer defensive driving

courses to the public. A spokesman for the Driver Improvement Association said the group had applied for a franchise but had yet to hear formally whether they had been granted it. He said the association intended to train new course managers to be used by other franchise holders. The principal of the All Star Driving School in Christchurch, Mrs Chris Holmes, said their first course would be held on February 1.

The Automobile Association’s traffic and safety manager, Mr John Strachan, said they hoped to run their first defensive driving course early next month.
