Youth flown to hospital

A Levin youth, injured in a canoeing accident on the Waimakariri River on Saturday afternoon, was flown for treatment by helicopter to Christchurch Hospital from which he was later discharged. Craig Fallon, aged 16, injured a hip on some rocks after falling out of his canoe on the river near Lake Pearson during one of the national Boys’ Brigade camp activities being held in North Canterbury. His bruises were treated before he was discharged from hospital and sent back to recover at the base camp at Waipara, said the camp manager, Mr Bill Lloyd. “He is walking around slowly, and will not be

going back canoeing, but I am sure we can fit him into one of the other modules.” The accident happened about 3.30 p.m., although how was not yet clear, said Mr Lloyd. Craig was one of five boys and one leader taking part in the canoeing, who were still completing the module. More than 800 boys are taking part in activities throughout North Canterbury during the 10-day camp, including tramping, horse-trekking, grass-ski-ing, climbing, kitemaking, computer and leisure activities.

A group of boys are also cycling from Waipara to Queen Elizabeth II Park via Mount Thomas.
