Fires on Canty beaches
The Woodend voluntary fire brigades were kept busy over the weekend with fires on the foreshores of both Wobdend and Waikuku beaches. On Saturday the brigade was called to a fire at Woodend Beach at about 5.30 p.m. About 1000 sq m of grass and scrub was burnt The Rangiora District Council’s water tankers were used to supply extra water, said the senior station officer, Mr Murray Lamb. About 8 p.m. last evening the brigade was called to a fire at Waikuku Beach. It was quickly brought under control. Mr Lamb said there had been about 2000 people on Woodend Beach and up to 800 at Waikuku Beach at the week-end.
