Easy Awapuni suits Westgate

Special correspondent Wellington The excellent four-year-old, Westgate, gets his chance to return to winning form when he tackles the $20,000 2ZA Cup (1600 m the first leg of the Manawatu T.A.B. double at Awapuni this afternoon.

Awapuni has had its shqjje of rain in the last day or so, but Westgate, which has seven wins from 10 starts, has won three times and been placed second once from four starts. Last week Westgate ran his “worst” race when fifth in the Selwyn Stakes, but afterwards the trainer Snow Lupton suggested that Westgate may be sharper with the run. Today he has 54.5 kg as compared with the 57kg carried in the Selwyn. While he will face a number of high class opponents, Westgate seems certain to be favourite. The field is a strong one. Reasonable Lady, Sound Belt, Classic March and Moondip have all raced well enough in recent times. Like Westgate, Reasonable Lady had a good winning sequence — in her case four — before running second behind Conchelle at Otaki earlier in the month. She, too, has winning form on easy tracks. Sound Belt was a winner at Woodville before running second in the Bayer Classic. He missed in the Avondale Guineas, but he was struck in the eye in that contest. Today the handicap scale sees him with just 49kg. Classic March won the Evergreen Stakes and since was unlucky when fifth in the Levin Stakes. The mare was ninth last time in the Dulcie Stakes, but that position came after she had been left in the unusual role of pacemaker. Easing in the ground will not bother her either. Moondip, the winner last Easter of the Higgins Stakes at Feilding, beat all but Crimesta at Otaki last time. Lagerfeld was a good fourth in the same race at Otaki, while Bold Silver has seconds at Wanganui and Avondale. Coronal’s third in resuming at Trentham earlier in the month, wasn’t a bad run. Final Illusion after a couple of seconds, beat a small but useful field in the Colenso Plate at Trentham. Star Pride is a good class galloper, which could take some beating as well. The winner of the corresponding race last year, Guess, looks well placed to take the second leg of the double, the $12,000 Homestyle Handicap (2200 m Guess, though trained at Takanini, has a good re-

cord on the track. The run will be his third in three days, but like last year he is getting better. He was fifth in the AMP and then close up third in Saturday’s Manawatu Cup.

Wexford King, with 53kg, could be some chance as well. After winning a couple, at Stratford and Woodville, missed in the Wanganui Cup, but last time he figured in a

splendid battle with Strike Regal at Otaki and only just went under. Signora and Bronze Valley, the Bull stablemates, both have winning form,
