Canterbury jobless figures up by 742
The number of registered unemployed jumped by 742 in Canterbury during November, according to the latest figures from the Department of Labour. In November, there were 9411 registered compared with 8669 in the previous month. Department supervising employment officer, Mr Brian White, said the rise was because 165 school leavers had joined the ranks of the unemployed in November. In November, there
were 477 school leavers registered compared with 312 the previous month. Mr White also said less people had been placed in jobs and there had been fewer job vacancies during the month. In October, 305 had been placed in work while November’s placement figures were only 255. The total figure includes Mid and North Canterbury, as well as the Christchurch area. Unemployment fell in Ashburton during Novem-
ber to 414, compared with 428 the previous month, the only area to see a drop in numbers. Rangiora’s unemployed rose by 40 while the biggest increase in Christchurch city was in the New Brighton area which jumped by 149. Blenheim was 1239 (1268), down 29, 9.0 per cent of the workforce. Nelson, 2192 (2114), up 78, 8.4 per cent. Greymouth, 1579 (1551), up 28, 11.8 per cent. Timaru, 2115 (2018), up 97, 9.2 per cent.
