Three-year-olds provide highlight

B y

ALEX MCMILLAN

The impeccably-bred three-year-old pacers, Brandy and Dry and Get Happy, provided the highlight of yesterday morning’s qualifying session at Addington Raceway when they fought out a keen finish in their heat over 2400 m. Get Happy, a handsome son of Lumber Dream and Jovial Jennie, was sent straight to the front by his trainer, Graham Court, and appeared to have his seven rivals well covered when he sprinted to a clear lead with 600 m to run. However, the youngster was inclined to race rather erratically under pressure in the run home and was collared in the last few strides by the Jack Smolenski-trained Brandy and Dry, which raced in midfield mostly. By Clever Innocence,

Brandy and Dry is out of the former brilliant but unsound racemare, Transglo (by Armbro Hurricane), which raced successfully from Smolenski’s stable In the late 19705. Brandy and Dry recorded a splendid 3min 11.6 s in drizzly conditions yesterday, the halfbrother to the talented Barbra Streisand being timed over his last 800 m in 61.32 s and 400 m in 31.275. Get Happy (3min 11.75) also gained his ticket, as did the third placegetter, Innerleithen (3c, Mark Lobell—Samantha Scott), with a'time of 3mln 12s. Other pacers to qualify were Ocean Blue (6g, Nat Lobell—Keakaha), 2600 m, 3min 32.95; Kotare Beau (4g, Spring Romp—Beladios), 2400 m, 3min 15.7 s and Tabella Leone (3f, Spring Romp—Ruling Lobell), 2400 m, 3min 17.95.
