Growers advised caution
PA Wellington People contemplating growing grapes commercially should be cautious, according to the president of the Grape Growers’ Council, Mr Ross Goodin. Potential entrants should consult wine companies and viticultural specialists before committing themselves. While there was obvious
export potential for topquality wine, investors had to be aware of the risks involved, Mr Goodin said. Those entering the industry should realise the cyclical nature of the viticultural industry. The 1985 vine pull was an indication of how overplanting could quickly create big problems.
