Cr Brennan won’t quit
By
KAY FORRESTER
Cr Hori Brennan, has no intention of resigning from the Christchurch City Council, although he will stand down as a Canterbury United Councillor.
Cr Brennan said yesterday he had resigned as a City Council representative on the United Council because he simply did not have the time to commit to that council. He has attended only one meeting of this
council term. “I’m sad to have to resign, but I think it is better for another councillor who has the time to be there. I will still keep my interest in the council, of course.”
His other commitments, especially those at the Nga Hau E Wha Marae, meant he could not attend United Council meetings, he said.
Cr Brennan, who has been suspended as secretary of the marae trust board and is involved in
High Court action over his suspension, said his marae commitments would not prevent his attending City Council meetings.
He was taken to task recently by fellow City Councillors for his absence from committee meetings.
He serves on three City Council committees, but has attended only a third of those meetings since his election last year. He has attended
almost all the council meetings. “I’ll be at the committee meetings from now on,” Cr Brennan promised yesterday. He had just attended a parks and recreation committee meeting.
Cr Alex Clark, the leader of the City Council Labour councillors, said he would recommend Cr Ruby Fowler as Cr Brennan’s replacement on the Canterbury United Council.
