Pike River search called off
The search for a missing retired Christchurch school teacher, John Richard Jackson, ended yesterday afternoon. Mr Jackson, aged 63, is missing in the Pike River area of South Westland and the police say there is little hope of finding him alive.
Just 15 of the original 40 searchers remained in the search area yesterday, after the discovery of Mr Jackson’s tent and other belongings on Monday. Constable Rodger Millard, of Haast, said it appeared Mr Jackson had left his camp site and “come to grief.”
Mr Jackson entered the area at Cascade on November 13, was seen at Big Bay on November 16, and made an entry in the Pike River Hut, dated November 18. Nothing has been heard of him since. The search was hampered throughout by bad weather. The case will be reviewed in a week, when the police will consider mounting a scaled-down search for more evidence of Mr Jackson’s fate.
