Victory to bowling cousins

By

GARY BIRKETT

The Leeston bowling cousins, Colin and lan Lowery, survived a day of .intense competition to win the Computerland United Classic pairs competition at the Canterbury Bowling Club yesterday. The country cousins overcame Arnold Memory and Alan Dalzell (Woolston W.M.C.), 12-11, In a tight final after earlier scraping through in section play and their semifinal. The day started as it finished for the Leeston pair. They were forced to an extra end before beating Cfaig Lange (Beckenham), 13-12, to reach the last eight and then pro-

duced some fine bowls to beat Neville Poole (Sumner), 15-7, in the quarter-finals. A classic fight-back in their semi-final against Peter Joyce and Tony Rea (Canterbury) saw them edge into the final. The Lowerys were down, 8-15, after nine of the 15 ends but fought back to level at 16-16 with three to play. In spite of dropping one shot on the last end they survived, 1917. Memory squeezed into the last eight by downing Maurice Nairn (Leeston), 12-11, but then breezed into the semi-finals. In a tight match they beat Travis Coup (Kaiapoi), 17-13, Memory pro-

ducing' some outstanding running shots. The Lowerys were ahead, 8-3, after eight ends of the final but Memory and Dalzell fought back strongly to take a 10-8 lead after 12 ends. The Leeston pair were a trifle fortunate to pick up three on the thirteenth and a measure gave them one more on the penultimate end. On the final end Memory looked to draw the second shot with his last bowl when holding one but he was a fraction heavy and the Leeston pair won, 12-11. They picked up a radiotape deck each plus an expenses paid trip to the

MacLeay Duff invitation pairs in Auckland early next year. Results were:— Last 16.— T. Coup (Kaiapol) 13, B. Nicholas (Elmwood) 10; R. Stewart (Burnside), 15, W.
