‘The Swans’
name is Linda.
11 years old and I love swans. I live in a small town called Roxtin. It has a shopping centre, train station, petrol station, parks and other entertainments plus many other things. There is also a country club — my favourite place. I go there every day just to sit and watch the swans. There are five white swans and three black.
By NICOLA MOORE aged 10, of Christchurch. Then came the tragic day. One afternoon when I had just been let out of school, I felt hot and stuffy. I walked across the street, walked three blocks and arrived at the country club. As I was walking down to the pond, I suddenly noticed the swans weren’t there. Since I came to the club every day I knew
quite a few people. I went into the restaurant and asked my friend Cathy where the swans were. “I hate to tell you this Linda but they have been sold to a zoo,” Cathy said. I didn’t, want Cathy to see me cry so I quickly walked out of the building and sat down on a bench. I cried steadily for five minutes. When I stopped I promised myself that some day I would buy as many swans as I could. ‘Honey Bee’ By Kelly Quayle, aged 11, of Nelson Flower to flower, plant to plant, Honey bees are in a chant, Collecting pollen here and there, On their back legs, isn’t that queer, Now back to his nest in the wood, A long day’s work over — isn’t that good.
