Plane crashes into highway
NZPA-AP Long Beach, California
A single-engine plane crashed on the busy San Diego Freeway yesterday, killing one person aboard the aircraft and setting off a rash of automobile acci-
dents, authorities said. It was unclear if the plane struck any vehicles before it slammed into the highway’s centre divider near the Long Beach Airport and burst into flames. Two people
were aboard the aircraft when it crashed, said Lieutenant Gary Whinery, of the police. One of those on board was killed on impact and the other was taken in critical condition to
Memorial Hospital, Long Beach. The crash triggered accidents involving at least five cars, said the Long Beach’ Fire Department’s dispatcher, Craig Beck, and the highway was closed in both directions.
