Strange renovation
The 77-year-old W. Strange building on Lichfield Street/High Street will be renovated. It was recently bought by an Auckland developer, Magellan Corporation, which is refurbishing it in an effort to preserve its historic character. A similar building, erected nearly 89 years ago, was destroyed by fire in 1906 and the present structure was built in 1910.
The appearance of the Oamaru stone building would hardly change, said Noel Gillespie Consultants, the engineers for the renovations. The only addition will be a modern veranda and awnings above the first floor windows.
