Dental deregulation plan

Political reporter Legislation which would allow people ' other than dentists to practise dentistry may be introduced this month to Parliament. The Minister of Health, Mr Caygill, confirmed yesterday that he hoped to bring in legislation revising the Dental Act before Christmas. This comes after recent indications by the Minister of Finance, Mr Doug-

las, that he wants the Government to tackle the monopoly some professions hold, by way of their occupational licensing systems. The dentists appear to have been choosen as a test case. Mr Caygill said that there was no particular reason for deregulation of the dental industry ahead of doctors or other health professionals. f

Broadly, he said, the legislation would allow people “to practise dentistry but not call themselves dentists.” This could also be applied to medicine, he said. “There is nothing in the Medical Practitioners' Act to say you can’t behave as a doctor. But you can’t call yourself a doctor unless you are registered as one,” said Mr Caygill.
