Strong youth challenge in Dulcie Stakes

Special correspondent Auckland For all the ability possessed by Tri Belle, Empire Rose, Kosha, Ma Chlquita and Limitless, the older horses could be hard pressed to contain their younger opponents in the Dulcie Stakes at the Cambridge Jockey Club’s meeting at Te Rapa today. Savana City, Miss Jaybeejay and Wave Rite are fillies of considerable ability and with 49kg under the weight-for-age conditions, they will be receiving upward of 5.5 kg from the others. The 1600-metres will most likely prove a bit short for Empire Rose and for Limitless too, now that she has had a race since back from her lay-off. The performances of these two fine stayers will be interesting nevertheless, both being in the DB Auckland Cup, still, and Limitless in the Lion Avondale Cup as well. Though unable to win, Savana City, for third place, and Miss Jaybeejay, for fifth, performed most creditably when they last raced, in the Wrightson Waikate Guineas, at Te Rapa on November 21.

Each was an Impressive winner the start before; Miss Jaybeejay in the 1600metres Cambridge Stud Sir Tristram Classic, at Te Rapa on October 26 and Savana City, a week before the Guineas, in the 1400-metre P. and M. Plaza Purse. Tri Belle, at her best, would push them all hard. But this will be her first race since early October and she has had a setback meanwhile, when taken to Melbourne for the W. S. Cox Plate. Tri Belle has been working attractively again. She is all quality, but the question is whether she will need this race. She has given the impression lately of requiring regular racing. Kosha and Pell Mell both have laststart minor placings, Kosha second and Pell Mell equal-third at Levin last week. Westen Lea will get the chance to round off a hat-trick of wins in the $30,000 Logan Plate, a 2000-metres for three-year-olds and a valuable preliminary to the Avondale Guineas in less than a fortnight. In: spite of his wide and difficult barrier position, Weston Lea will almost certainly be the favourite.
