Connie Lawn ready for metric-mile test

Special correspondent Invercargill

Connie Lawn, Southland’s leading race mare, is ideal material for the New Zealand Deer Suede Distributors Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Winton Jockey Club’s meeting at Ascot Park today. The well-performed Beaufort Sea mare served notice of her readiness for today’s metric-mile test when she downed the sprinters at the Southland meeting last week. Connie Lawn looked a fitter mare that day as a result of two earlier races in a fresh campaign. She now seems ready to step up to 1600metres and produce a near peak effort. Sea War is vastly improved and may test the favourite. There was plenty of

merit in his second on the middle day of the Cup meeting at Riccarton. He is seasoned, in form, and obviously capable of making his presence felt against this questionable opposition. Chook A Rook, an established metric miler, resumed at the Southland meeting 10 days ago, running a fair fourth. He is likely to be sharper today and should lay claims to plenty of support. Mutta Burra, from Cecil Beckett’s inform Invercargill stable, is an appealing prospect for the High Ice Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. He has appeared above average at times and seemed a little unlucky when third at the Southland meeting last week. He is coming to hand nicely in a fresh, preparation.
