East and West
Sir,—lt appears that. Susan Taylor is not aware of the position taken by dedicated communists early in World War 11. At the time that Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia were friends, they objected to military service. However, after the invasion of Russia by Germany they changed and volunteered for military service. They were not, therefore, conscientious objectors in the true.sense. It was during this period that Soviet Russia attacked and annexed the then independent States of Latvia; Lithuania and Estonia. They also tried to capture Finland but were eventually stopped by fierce Finnish resistance led by General Mannerheim, who is still a Finnish national hero. The contention that communism and socialism are the same is dangerous propaganda. Socialism is possible in a democratic situation, i.e. as the result of free elections and with an opposition party. Communism requires a totalitarian State. —Yours, etc., M. JOHNSTON. November 26, 1987.
