Woman faces four driving counts

Four charges relating to an incident on the Main South Road, near Weedons, in which a police car, to avoid a head-on crash, smashed into a power pole, have been laid against a 24-year-old student Tracey Marie Shaw (Mr G. R. Lascelles) was remanded, without plea, to December 14 by Judge Erber when she appeared ■before him in the District Court yesterday. Shaw is charged with driving in a manner which might have been dangerous to William Chamberlain, being the driver of a vehicle in which an accident occurred, failing to ascertain whether anyone had ben injured, failing to stop after an accident, and failing to render all practicable assistance to an injured person. DRUG OFFENCE Introducing drugs into prisons was becoming a growing problem by the day, said Judge Erber to a young mother convicted of taking prescribed drugs into Addington Prison for a prisoner. Anne Marie Flutey, aged 21, admitted that in taking in five valium tablets and seven benhexol tablets she did not know she was breaking the law. Flutey, a first offender, committed the offence on November 27, said Sergeant W. P. Creasey. She was remanded to December 14 for sentence. ARSON CHARGE A man charged with attempting to set fire to the Royal Lounge massage parlour in Tuam Street on Saturday was remanded in custody to December 3. The Judge told Jimmy Tuhikarama, aged 47, unemployed, that the circumstances in the alleged offence gave him no confidence that he would not interfere with witnesses, if granted bail. charged with being found on the premises without reasonable excuse. RAPE CHARGES Two men facing unrelated rape charges were further remanded without pleas being taken. Arthur Waraetini, aged 25, a soldier, was remanded to December 4. He is charged with detaining a 40-year-old woman taxi driver without her consent with intent to have sexual Intercourse with her, raping her, and robbing her of car keys, a leather wallet, and $BO in cash. The alleged offences were said to have taken place near Burnham Military Camp on November 21. Michael James Wilson, aged 19, a sickness beneficiary (Mr J. S. Fairclough), was remanded to December 7. He is accused of raping a woman, aged 25, at a house in Papanui early on November 22. Both men were remanded in custody. CHARGES DENIED Eight charges of fraudulently using Canterbury Hospital prescription forms to obtain a pecuniary advantage from eight chemists’ shops were denied by Christopher Rodney Cook. Cook, aged 31, unemployed, was remanded to February 2, next year, for a defended hearing. Police allege that the eight charges relate to offences committed on October 22. PERIODIC DETENTION For receiving a $15,000 car, Steven John Gantley was sentenced to periodic detention for five months. He was also disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence for 12 months. According to the police, the car, unlawfully taken from an Ashburton sale yard, was found in the garage at Gantley’s home. The chassis number and registration plates had been changed. Gantley said that he knew the car was stolen and that he had swapped his own vehicle for it. The offence took place on October 18.
