Charges over marae incident adjourned

Charges against the suspended secretary of the national marae trust board, and three of his sons, arising from an incident at the National Marae in Pages Road on August 22, did not proceed in the District Court yesterday. Assault and obstruction charges against the four men were to have been defended yesterday. The charges were adjourned until February 24, for a new hearing to be set, on the application of defence counsel, Mr M. J. Knowles. The adjournment was agreed to by the police,

represented by Detective Sergeant P. J. Parsons. George Te Otinga Hori Brennan, aged 54, a waterside worker, faces charges of inciting others to obstruct a policeman and with assaulting, and resisting him. David Unuka Rakeiora Brennan, aged 25, a supervisor, is charged with intentionally obstructing a policeman, and with assaulting him. Te Ari Frederick Gerard Brennan, aged 30, unemployed, is charged with obstructing, and resisting a police officer. Peter Tehuia 0 Te Rangi Brennan, aged 26, a

freezing worker, is charged with intentional obstruction. Mr Knowles, applying for the adjournment, said that since the charges had been laid, proceedings had been commenced in the High Court. An issue in the proceedings would be relevant to the charges. He submitted that it would be in the interests of justice for the charges to wait until the High Court matter had been determined. The four men were further remanded at large to February 24.
