Philippines

Sir,—Murray Horton’s report on the Philippines (November 19) Is Interesting, but yet another example of a "foreigner” commenting on life in that country. Phillppine-bom persons now resident in New Zealand make many trips home but I have never read or heard an account of their impressions. Does the media think them incapable of intelligent observation? They would, at least, have avoided Mr Horton's statement that the three main islands are "Luzon, Negros, and Mindanao.” The main Island groups are Luzon, Vlsayas and Mindanao; Negros is part of Vlsayas. While there is much tragedy in the Philippines, it is a pity that Mr Horton did not look at positive features, such as the people’s pursuit of higher education, “the only wealth which cannot be stolen.” Here is an area where we might well emulate the Filipinos. — Yours, etc., RICHARD L. N. GREENAWAY. November 19,1987.
