Cadets rescued in harbour

Six sea cadets clung far 15 minutes to an overturned sailing dinghy off Corsair Bay yesterday before being rescued by two vessels from the Canterbury Volunteer Coastguard.

One cadet was taken by ambulance to Christchurch Hospital suffering from hypothermia. The coastguard president, Mr Garry Freeman, said the cadets, who are attached to H.M.N.Z.S. Stedfast, capsized their 5.5 m sailing dinghy In a

blustery north-east wind at 3.12 p.m.

The accident was seen by staff of the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s signal tower, who alerted the coastguard. The cadets, five young men and a woman, were about 500 m Offshore.

They were picked up by the vessels Daniel J. and Red Pepper, and taken to Naval Point. Their dinghy was towed into Corsair Bay. The incident was the first of two coastguard rescues in Lyttelton Harbour yesterday after-

noon. A runabout carrying four men and two women was towed to Naval Point by the Daniel J. after its engine failed. The runabout had been drifting towards Shag Reef. The occupants were unhurt.
